As new coal-fired power plants come on line to meet the growing demand for electricity in the US and around the world, there is an increasing need to clean plant emissions to meet clean air regulations. Special pumps help to operate these scrubbers efficiently and handle the abrasive slurries used in the flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) process.

If you have experience pumping slurries, you know it's not an easy task. Slurries are heavy and difficult to pump. They cause excessive wear on pumps and their components and are known to clog suction and discharge lines if not moving fast enough. Most importantly, it’s a challenge to make slurry pumps last for a reasonable amount of time. But, there are a few things you can do to extend the life of your slurry pump and make pumping slurry less of a challenge.

Slurry pumps are mainly used in industrials of mining, metallurgy, dredge, power, coal and other solid slurry transport.

Our firm has strong technical force and is specially engaged in the research of abrasion resistant materials of slurry pumps, sewage pumps and water pumps and the development of new products. The materials include high chrome white iron, duplex stainless steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, rubber, etc.

To reduce wear, reduce the pump discharge pressure to the lowest possible point.

The basic mechanical seal flushing programme is very simple. It requires that a clear/clean fluid (usually water) is introduced into the space between the actual seal and the impeller side outlet restriction. The flushing fluid is introduced at a pressure higher than the pumping pressure, thus ensuring positive outflow/flushing of the mechanical seal and a clean operating environment.

The FGD process begins when the limestone feed (rock) is reduced in size by crushing it in a ball mill and then mixed with water in a slurry supply tank. The slurry (approx. 90% water) is then pumped into the absorption tank. As the consistency of the limestone slurry tends to change, suction conditions can occur which can lead to cavitation and pump failure.

Another important target=_blank title=Part of the Slurry Pump>part of the slurry pump is its casing, which bears all the pressure. The slurry pump casing should have a large clearance between the impeller and the diversion angle to reduce wear and prevent large solid particles from getting stuck. Due to the extra space, there is more recirculation in the slurry pump casing under various operating conditions. Again, this accelerates wear compared to typical pumps.

It is often used if a short period of dry running is expected. Fluid is introduced into the area between the back of the seal face and the tight-fitting outlet on the drive side of the slurry pump.
